The light-emitting diode or (LED) is a Semiconductor light source. They have been introduced as a practical electronic component in early 60’s. Early LEDs produced low intensity light. In recent years the invention and development of the high power white light LED has led the way to use them for general illumination.

The key advantages of LED-based lighting is its high efficiency that measured by its light output per unit power input. White LEDs quickly matched and overtook the efficiency of standard incandescent and fluorescent lighting systems.

Solid state lamp that uses LEDs is subject to very limited wear and tear if operated and design correctly. Many of the LEDs produced in the 70s and 80s are still operating today. The typical lifetime of LEDs is 25,000 to 100,000 hours.

Those characteristics nature of the LEDs like its very long lifespan , environmentally friendly , toxic free material, reduction in maintanence costs, energy efficiency thus reducing the emission of Greenhouse Gases, has made it the 21st century light source for the lighting industry.

An LED light saves up to 85% of energy compare to incandescent lamps and 50% lesser of those CFL lamps. They can be dimmed and do not flickers like many fluorescents do. Led lights can be instant on and work very well in cold conditions unlike fluorescents. They won’t damage in applications that required frequent on-off switching.

The typical strength of LED lighting is reducing electricity consumption. With the proper design, an LED circuit can approach a very high efficiency almost 80%, which means much of the electricity will be converting to light and a small amount will be lost as heat. The opposite will happened with the traditional bulbs which operate at only 20~30% efficiency (much of the electrical energy is lost as heat). In real money terms, if a 40 Watt fluorescent bulb is used over a year, with an electrical cost of $0.23 cents/kilowatt hour, $80 will be spent on electricity costs. In another way of the $80 expense, $40 has been used to heat up the room, not to light up the room. If an efficient 15watt LED tube had been used, the electricity cost would be $30 per year - there would be a cost savings of $50 on electricity during the year.

Realistically the cost savings would be higher as most conventional light bulbs blow out within a year and where the lighting device needs to be embedded into inaccessible places, The LED’s would virtually eliminate the need for routine replacement/maintenance.

Perhaps the main limitation to the adoption of LED lighting as a lighting standard is the higher cost of led lights. It is true the cost keeps going down; but LED lights are still expensive. Beside the fact that the cost is recouped over time and in energy cost savings and that it is significantly cheaper to maintain led lights, the best value comes from commercial use where maintenance and replacement costs are expensive. We are certain that tomorrows LED is brighter, cheaper, will last longer and consume lesser power than today. This is an exciting area and we predict that in the near future, LED lighting applications will be replace virtually every type of lights, bulbs, and lamps that are currently in use.
